Tips for a Successful Food Recovery

The following are a few simple tips that will help ensure that your volunteer experience goes smoothly and the food you recover is safe to eat.

Preparing for the recovery

  • Make sure that the interior of your vehicle is clean.

  • If you are sick, please stay home

  • If you have a cut, cover it with a bandage and if possible, disposable gloves.

  • Dress for personal safety and safe food handling:

    • Clean clothes

    • Long pants (no shorts)

    • Closed-toe, non-slip shoes (e.g., sneakers)

  • Long hair tucked into baseball cap or pulled back, hair nets may be required at some locations.

  • No jewelry

Remember to

  • Make sure all food gets weighed when you pick up or drop off; this number should be recorded on the Food Tracking Form. 
  • Submit the Food Tracking Form after EVERY RECOVERY.
  • Take photos of you, any people involved, and/or the food you picked up. Email the photos to sdsu.frn.pr@gmail.com

Safe Food Handling

  • Wash hands up to elbows with warm water and soap.

  • Wear gloves any time you are touching food.

  • Hair should always be pulled back or in a hair net.

  • Wash hands after you engage in any of the following:

    • Use the restroom​

    • Sneeze

    • Touch your hair, face, clothes, or any part of your body

    • Handle raw meat or eggs

    • Eat or drink

    • Use any cleaning chemicals

  • Do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum near food prep/service areas.

  • Do not set any food containers on the ground.
